The first thing to realize is that what you are about to do is a normal and regular thing. The second thing to realize is that, no matter how you say it or where you say it or when you say it, the other person is not going to take it well. Your natural instinct, unless this person really hurt you, is to soften the blow.
Maybe you offer friendship instead, or that you need some time to yourself to figure things out. And maybe it's true! But more often than not, the best course of action is to just make a clean break.
